The prevention of the embryo implantation is not an abortion, but still belongs to contraception, because a “pre-embryo” is not an embryo. To justify recourse to “emergency contraception”, it is in fact maintained that, not only does it not act through an abortive mechanism, but actually makes it possible to reduce the number of abortions.
Answer
“The attempt to define as a ‘pre-embryo’ an embryo in the stages preceding implantation, thereby downgrading it to the level of something undifferentiated, runs counter to the objective truth about the individuality and autonomy of the pre-implantation embryo, as demonstrated by genetics.”
“At the moment of fertilization, that is of the penetration of the ovum by the ‘winning spermatozoa’, a new biological entity, the zygote, is formed. It is at this precise moment that the adventure of a new human life begins. Biology has taught us for many years and embryology, and in particular modern genetics, have only confirmed, that from the stage of the zygote, the human embryo presents all the characteristics of a new individual human being, developing its own properties in a wholly autonomous manner, holding in itself the key to its own development. It is at the moment of fertilization that this new human being has begun his/her individual life, embarking on a vital cycle which will lead him/her to become a foetus, a new-born, a child and adult until the moment of natural death. Because that which will be the adult is already included in the foetus, reason itself prompts the conclusion that the embryo in general, and therefore the pre-implantation embryo, has the value of a human person and must be treated as such, acknowledging the rights of the person, and primarily the right to life”.
